Festival Fellows Anisah and Anthony

Hello, my name is Anthony Ligon and I attend Wilbur Cross High School. I’m involved with the Uconn Gear Up Program and a lady named Julia introduced me to the Arts and Ideas Fellowship Program. She knows how much I really love theater and she thought that this would be a great way for me to get some real background knowledge on what goes on in a non-profit organization. Julia, my dear friend, told me that this program not only has to do with the arts, but also involves writing, marketing, and budgeting, as well. She thought this would be a nice opportunity to get my feet wet in other fields of work, just to explore other options. So far I’ve been having the best time of my life and I can’t wait to engage in more activities this program has to offer.

I remember sitting in homeroom at school months ago, listening to the morning news and hearing that there were only a few applications for this fellowship program. Just the name alone caught my eye. (I can tell you this because I don’t usually pay attention to the morning news; no one does!) When I heard dancing and writing, I got excited and bugged my music teacher every day until he gave me an application and now that I’m in the program, I’m really glad that I had. It’s nothing like I thought it would be but much, much more. Going into this program I thought that it would be strictly arts and creativity, but the Arts and Ideas Fellowship Program has more to offer me.

For the first time ever I toured the Shubert Theater, and instead of being the audience (like every other time I walk into a theater), I was behind the scenes. I learned everything from what an orchestra pit is to how to truly capture a person’s beauty, movement, and sound on a stage. It is way more difficult than I ever imagined, and I can’t wait to get hands on with these types of experiences in the upcoming festival in June.
