A Perfect Pairing: Brews & BBQ

Award-winning chef and New Haven native Jason Sobocinski moves from the screen of the Cooking Channel's "The Big Cheese" to the Festival's virtual stage for a lesson on beer and BBQ. Jason, a lifelong foodie with a master's in gastronomy, is the co-owner of the Black Hog Brewing company with his brother Tom and their close friend Tyler Jones. Bonded by their love of food and beer, the trio shares their passion for family and food with a savory menu and "beers you want to drink more than just one of," Jason says. With this Arts & Ideas partnership, Black Hog Brewing has paired up with The Stack—rated Connecticut's Best Barbecue by Connecticut Magazine—to offer four beer and meat pairings. Join Jason on Zoom on May 8 at 7 PM for a live lesson.

Jason says beer and barbecue are "two of the greatest things in the world!" Today, he talks with us about his upcoming Arts & Ideas event.

What is the secret to a perfect beer pairing?

We brew for balance. A balanced beer pairs nicely with food; it doesn’t overwhelm, but also doesn’t take backstage.

What's your favorite pairing?

Granola Brown Ale with granola brown bratwurst! Smokey rich meats cooked slowly with bold flavors need crisp refreshing beers to wash them down. This one just works. It's so good together.

What can we expect to experience during this virtual food event?

We’re doing some of our favorites: pulled pork, granola brown bratwurst, pulled chicken, and pastrami. The full menu, which is available for pick up or delivery, has so much more, with amazing sides. Get the broccoli salad; you'll be surprised by how amazing it is.
