This conference inaugurates a new initiative on Peacebuilding at Yale’s Jackson School of Global Affairs. Spanning two days, participants will discuss attempts to realize peace in a range of contexts, drawing examples from a diverse range of countries around the world (including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Northern Ireland, Rwanda, and others) while also considering how “peace” is understood and sought at Yale and in New Haven.

Exploring Vietnamese Block Printing

In Partnership With New Haven Free Public Library

The Best We Could Do is a graphic novel memoir by Vietnamese-American author-illustrator Thi Bui. To tie in with the book’s themes about identity and discovering her heritage, we’ll explore the traditional Vietnamese art of wood block printing. Devin Fitzgerald, a lecturer at Yale, will present a history of this art form, including showing several Vietnamese wood blocks from his collection. Afterward, participants will engage in a creative activity by using Tinker Lab supplies to explore the process of block printing.

Compagnia TPO: +ERBA A Forest in the City

Presented in Partnership with The Legacy Theatre and part of the Gordon Geballe Environmental Series

In this interactive show, +ERBA invites children from the audience to join two dancers on stage to create an imaginary city. One dancer builds the houses and streets, while the other creates the insects, grass, and trees. Children from the audience help color and populate the city. The newborn city becomes a living environment as new characters and events are added. Dancers and audience members share the stage in this cross-collaboration of art and play.

With 2.7 billion movie tickets purchased annually, Bollywood is the most widely consumed form of fiction in India. How has the industry used its reach? What themes has it imparted, both past and present? The penniless Vietnamese refugee became a father of 5 Hebrew speaking Israeli daughters. His daughter - Vaan, describes her parents' ordeal using a razor sharp language in her blog. She feels trapped in circles of identity which will never meet.

Compagnia de’ Colombari: King Lear

Compagnia de’ Colombari’s KING LEAR, adapted and directed by Karin Coonrod, is a raw, primal, and potent “paper crown” Lear that strips down the Shakespearian classic to its essence. An ensemble of ten actors ranging in age and gender all embody King Lear at the beginning. One by one, they strip off their paper crowns, transform into other characters, and conduct a take-over of the text and the theatre space. Spreading across the play’s treacherous psychic cartography, the performers dig deep into the internal and external voyage of a mighty king who loses and then finds himself again after arduous challenges.

Afghan Women's Narratives through Art: Exploring Themes of Identity & Home

By the end of 2024, United Nations expects 130 million people worldwide to be forcibly displaced from their homes by conflict, persecution, natural disasters, and other extreme events. 5,000 refugees have been resettled in New Haven. How can we get to know our refugee neighbors, offer support as they build new lives and be a part of the healing process?
